Whether you’re a first-time SAT test taker or coming back for another round, having the right form of identification is a must. Why ID Requirements Matter

On test day, the test center staff will compare your admission ticket and photo ID to confirm your registration and identity. If the information doesn’t match up—even something as small as a nickname vs. your legal name—you won’t be admitted. Testing staff also aren’t required to hold your seat if you have to run home for the right ID, so it pays to prepare ahead of time.

What Makes an ID Acceptable

Your ID needs to be:

  • Valid (unexpired) and government-issued (or issued by the school you currently attend)
  • Original, physical (no photocopies or electronic images)
  • In English, with your full, legal name exactly matching your admission ticket
  • Showing a recent, recognizable photo

Common Examples

  • Passports
  • Driver’s licenses
  • Government-issued non-driver ID cards

School IDs can also work if you currently attend that school (and they’re valid through December of the current calendar year).

Things That Won’t Cut It

  • Electronic copies
  • Temporary IDs
  • Employee ID cards
  • Any document marked as “not valid as identification”
  • Credit cards (even with a photo)

If You’re 21 or Older

Here’s where the rules get extra strict: only a valid government-issued photo ID (e.g., a driver’s license or passport) is acceptable. School IDs aren’t allowed if you’re 21+ on test day.

If You're Outside the United States

You’ll need a valid passport for admission. Some countries allow other forms of ID:

  • Ghana: Ghana Card
  • India: Aadhaar PVC Card

Be sure to check the specific ID rules for wherever you plan to test.

Keeping Your ID Handy

Keep your ID with you all day at the test center. You may have to show it multiple times, even during breaks. Getting admitted in the morning doesn’t guarantee your ID will be accepted later if something seems off—so stay prepared.

The consequences are serious. You risk dismissal from the test center, score cancellation, and no refunds. Not worth the headache. Double-check your ID documents a few days before the test to avoid any last-minute surprises.
